My Inwood List

Below is my total Inwood list. There are one or two birds that were outside of the official park boundaries of Inwood Hill Park, but just barely. For instance, the American Avocet was on the dock of the Dyckman Street Marina just outside the south end of the park. My total as of the end of August 2021 was 226 species. NOTE: The following is my personal bird list for Inwood. It is not meant to be a complete list of the birds of Inwood Hill Park. ADDENDA: At the end of this list I have placed an addenda of another 33 species recorded in the park. Please check that list for notes on these additional species. This brings the total park list to 259 species, but I am sure it should be more.

In the list below, comments on occurrence are based solely on my own records. They do not intend to reflect all park records. Occurrence refers to birds in their preferred habitat. For instance Chipping Sparrows are mainly on the ballfields; Swamp Sparrows in the marshy areas. Species listed as rare I have seen on a handful of occasions. All photos were taken in the park.

ADDENDA At least a further 33 species have been recorded in the park in addition to those on my personal list above. I have based this list on a list compiled by Nathan O'Reilly and supplemented by records in Urban Ornithology: 150 Years of Birds in New York City by P. A. Buckley, Walter Sedwitz, William J. Norse, and John Kieran (Comstock Publishing, 2018). Where I know the specifics of a record I have included those details. Even this list (my personal list plus the addenda below) should not be considered a totally complete list of the birds of Inwood Hill Park. In compiling it I noticed a few species that are not on it that I think there must be records of for the park, but that I have not come across. Whip-poor-will, Kentucky Warbler, and Red Crossbill all come to mind immediately, but I am sure there are more.
